| There is another movement that is gaining momentum calling for the states to change the way electoral votes are distributed. It is called the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. States that sign it agree to give all of their electoral votes to whichever candidate wins the popular vote for the entire nation. It only goes into effect once enough states have signed it to make up the 270 vote majority required to elect a president. And it neutralizes the Electoral College by declaring the winner of the popular vote to be the winner of the election. This has pretty much all the same problems as a pure popular vote, it’s just easier to implement because it takes advantage of existing laws allowing states to allocate their electoral votes as they see fit, rather than writing a whole new set of laws. |
