Election Day and the Electoral College
The primary elections allow each party to narrow their field to one strong candidate, behind whom they throw their support. Next is the general election, where the two major candidates compete against each other, and any third party or independent candidates. On election day any registered voter can vote for any candidate, regardless of which party they are a member of or which state they live in. However, they are not actually voting for the president. Instead, they are voting for a member of the Electoral College to vote for the president.
